But you could make the exact same argument, when excusing an Islamic fundamentalist cleric talking about Jihad:

It's just hyperbole
He's just "a bit over the top"
Just getting a bit carried away.
It means something different, his audience understands the way he talks.
He doesn't really mean it, not literally.
He's just getting emotional, exaggerating to make a point, using crude imagery.

This man's been a public figure for decades. Words are his profession. Why not just assume he means exactly what he says, and he knows exactly what the impact of those words will be? Isn't that the simple and obvious explanation?
