AOL's service has gone live. Although it advertises the "biggest collection on the internet" it is just not so, or is at best true for 17 days until Napster goes public. They don't even know how many tracks they have, as they state 300,000 in one spot and 400,000 in another.

I've had bad experiences with AOL's music service so far and I have serious doubts that they will attract much attention except from subscribers with very limited knowledge of P2P. They should get some business, though, first because a lot of their subscribers tend to be less tech savvy, and secondly because of good parental controls which means some solid business in the 12-16 year old market. No standalone player tie-in will hurt, too.

Like Apple, I think AOL's service will become a specialty niche.

Concenring Apple, I saw their television ad for iTunes and they have the same complete marketing blindness as always. They are advertising their Windows-compatible service with an emphasis on the Apple logo. Idiots. Why didn't they buy Roxio back when it would have been cheap, and perform a parallel site integration?

Napster will launch with 500,000 tracks compared to iTunes 200,000, and now Apple has to face competition for the IPod as well.
