Telecoms show looks ahead with video and Web calls

AMSTERDAM, Oct 10 (Reuters) -

A telecoms trade show in Geneva next week will turn the spotlight on services such as Internet telephony and mobile video calls which have become reality, four years after the industry hyped them up at its last similar gathering.

The global huddle in the Swiss mountains, featuring speeches from Microsoft's MSFT.O Bill Gates, Cisco's CSCO.O John Chambers and Hewlett-Packard's HPQ.N Carly Fiorina, can be hardly more different than the previous ITU Telecom World show in 1999 when the technology stocks bubble was nearing its peak.

Four years on, technology and telecoms shares have crashed and cheap capital has dried up, forcing old and new telecom carriers to slash investments.

However, the bottom of the industry recession may have been reached this quarter, executives and analysts agree.
