The shipping news has many implications. To the extent of how much harbor, ancillary facilities and transport for basic materials in exporting countries need upgrade to cope with the new requirements.

The British Empire, last century, needed to finance Canada’s Saint Laurent canal and railways in Argentina and Brazil.

The US raise needed the Panama Canal to be built.

Japan needed Turabao container port and Carajas harbor and it railway.

Get a map and look at it.
China will need the Trans-Andean tunnels and railways, river shipping lines, and highways across the Andes and the Amazonian jungle. So that resources are not transported to the Atlantic coast and form there across the Panama Canal. Needs to be shipped form a Pacific Coast harbor.

Also it needs to blast a canal between Malaysia and Thailand to avoid ships going across the Sumatra straight.

China’s raise will require quite a few Giga Dollars of investment. They are thus far only investing Giga Dollars inland; outside of it is still to come.

Li-Ka Shing is investing in Telecoms 3G and perhaps may not be overlooking that. The superboom is still to come once the Giga Dollars stop financing Mega Malls that resemble Disneyland and start financing infrastructure.
