"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom"

Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

First, let me start by saying that I believe it is only by the work of the Holy Spirit that any come to know Christ. It is all the work of God and we are but jars of clay.

Having said this, I would like to make a statement with regards to Prov 9:10. I believe that in order to bring about an initial desire within the life of a heathen we must first present to them the idea of hell and of God's wrath against the unrepentant. I believe that in order to help jump start the heart of the unsaved individual we must present to them the idea of hell and we must not be soft at this point. Taking the idea of hell out of sermons is weakening the power of the evangelist.

The other night I was watching an interview of a gentleman that had the chance to evangelize to Tiger Woods. He approached him and asked if he died that day, did he know what was waiting for him. He told Tiger of Charles Barkley's younger brother who flatlined and could see every person in the waiting room and hear their conversations. His brother then went on a journey to a place where there was burning trees and the ground was smoldering. In the middle was a large lake of fire. The evangelist said that Wood's eyes grew and he could see that his heart was accepting of this. He went on to ask Tiger is he had ever lied. Tiger said yes. He asked Tiger what that made him. "A Liar" Tiger replied. He went on to ask the same question about stealing, lusting, etc... He then asked Tiger if he died this day where did he think he would go. Tiger responded, "probably hell". At that point a fan came up and asked for an autograph and the moment was done. However, he finished by saying that a week later John Smoltz sat down to dinner with Tiger and was able to share Christ with him.

My point is, what got Tiger's attention was the idea that one day judgement awaited. It is not the idea that God loves us so much but the fear of God that starts us on our quest. By removing this essential ingredient we are weakening the force of our message.
