Carter gets a lot of blame but if you study the history you'll find that the seeds of the oil embargo and the ousting of the Shah were already underway when he took power. He also had a inflation-causing Vietnam War debt to take care of. The energy crisis, Iran hostage-taking and failed rescue mission were a triple whammy to Carter. If that rescue mission had succeeded, who knows, but he was just as unlucky as he was anything else.
