Today I subbed for the classes I usually just accompany, which meant being there at the opening of the day. I was surprised that not only do the students stand and say the Pledge of Allegiance, they also say a pledge to the Texas flag, followed by a moment of silence. Which wasn't. But at least it wasn't prayer- which was good, since in Texas you can never be too sure what will happen. The Texas pledge: "Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one and indivisible." And yes, I oh-so-tastefully endorse the use of the term "spiritual".
