But every day in the paper, there are stories about meth labs exploding, thefts of all sorts, robberies, murders, etc. I read recently that 50% of the crimes committed are directly due to drugs.

That comment assumes that legalization means simply halting enforcement and everything else continues as is. That's a scare tactic. It would never happen that way. The current approach would be replaced by regulation, which means that you wouldn't have meth labs blowing up any more than you have Lipitor labs blowing up now. There might be new and different problems associated with the regulation approach, but not the problems you suggest. Legalization would mitigate those.
