"...or why and how France lost 30 times more of its own citizens to heat in a month than we lost soldiers in battle in two years. Apparently French apartments are far more deadly places than the Pakistani border or the Sunni Triangle."
Pity how a specious argument can spoil a well written piece.

Stating that the US lost 25 times more of its own citizens to gun related murders in 2000 than were lost in 2 years of battle is just as irrelevant.

Most interesting is the way Hanson fails to comment on the economic effects of the 200 billion that's to be spent. Nor does he comment on the 1.1 trillion that has been spent/lost as a result of the Sept. 11. Nor does he comment on the deficit and consumer debt which will have an effect on war spending at some point.
And no where does he point out that the US and Europe supply the funds for these Islamofacists by buying oil from those who fund them.

Hanson wants to discuss myths but misses the problem which is that by cooperation one has the best chance of solving international problems. Put in another way Maurice's NUN is a better tool than unilateral action by the US(or any other nation).
