Hi Maurice Winn; Neocon's argument was more than a little fallacious. For example:

Why are we in thrall of the French and Germans? The Germans are only an ally today because we purged them of Nazis, fed them, and helped them rebuild yesterday.

The fact is that the Spanish, who we did not purge of fascists, are now, in fact, one of our main allies in Iraq. So the argument that if we had refrained from fighting WW2 the Germans would not now be an ally fails.

And of course, since I do have access to an alternate world where Germany and Britain signed a peace agreement in late 1940 and the US never got involved in the European conflict, I can assure anyone who is interested that in that alternate world, the Germans did become, in fact, an ally of ours by 1980, despite our failing to defeat them in war.
