Indeed, if you think that the conforming Brits are more free than the Americans, you are lost in a world of your own devising. What is true is that we are nowhere near the preconditions for a world government, or even a true community of nations. Even in Europe, the Swedes voted against joining the Eurozone, and the latest polls show that the people still prefer a "Europe of Nations" to a superstate. We are still in a condition of anarchy, internationally. All talk of "international law" is metaphorical, if not a simple joke, absent agreed upon tribunals and mechanisms of enforcement. In that case, how we comport ourselves will be decided on a case by case basis, according to the usual criterion of national interest. Yes, the default position is to honor agreements to which we are party, but that does not mean that we will not bend or break "the law" as occasion warrants....... |
