High-Performance LCoS(R) Microdisplays Chosen for Digital Photo Processor
TEMPE, Ariz., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Brillian Corporation (Nasdaq: BRLC - News) today announced that the company's LCoS® microdisplays have been selected by Shanghai Liebold Science & Technology Co., Ltd. (Liebold) for a unique e-film application. Liebold recently introduced both the LB-DE attachment, an electronic film holder for traditional minilabs, and the Super e-2108, a complete digital color photo processor, based on Brillian's BR1280 SXGA imagers. These are the first commercial products in the world to utilize liquid-crystal-on-silicon microdisplays as the electronic negative to process digital color photos.
ADVERTISEMENT The LB-DE Digital Color Photo Processing attachment (electronic film holder) allows the traditional minilab to upgrade its existing system hardware to easily print high-resolution digital photos. The e-film series can be installed on most minilab models and allows the minilab to be interchangeable between traditional and digital by simply changing the film holder.
The Super e-2108 Digital Color Photo Processing Machine accepts data from several storage media types, including digital cameras and computers, and can be used in the future for transmission of pictures over 3G networks. Located in various travel and entertainment locations throughout China, these processors enable on-the-spot printing of high-resolution, digital-quality photos for a minimal cost and allow for do-it-yourself user enhancements, such as improving contrast or color and adding text messages.
"We believe Brillian's LCoS® microdisplays offer the most advanced imaging technology currently available for digital photo processing applications. We were able to add user enhancements, such as multimedia messaging, because Brillian's LCoS® microdisplays allow for easy manipulation of pixels and feature a very fast response time. In addition to these performance advantages, the Brillian technology offers the future potential we require, including the capability to go to ultrahigh resolution," stated Mr. Zongxi Zhu, President of Liebold.
Because of the small size of the microdisplays, smaller than one-inch diagonal, the optics and other image-related components can be made smaller enabling the complete Liebold system with processor to utilize a minimal footprint of eight square feet. Brillian's LCoS® Gen I and LCoS® Gen II microdisplays have high optical efficiency and more than 92 percent fill factor, achieving higher brightness with a low wattage light source and lower power requirements than traditional technologies. In addition, Brillian's LCoS® microdisplays enable the photo processors to print with higher resolution and faster exposure time than polysilicon-based equipment.
Rainer Kuhn, Senior Director of Sales and Marketing for Brillian Corporation, stated, "The e-film market provides a unique opportunity to apply the advantages of high-resolution liquid-crystal-on-silicon microdisplay technology. Using Brillian's high-quality microdisplays as the key enabler for their digital photo processing system, Liebold is the first company to commercialize a Digital LCoS® Photo Processing System that is affordable for most minilab operations. We are proud to be working with this cutting-edge company that has received various awards and patents based on these high- performance products. We look forward to seeing rapid adoption of this technology in the photo processing market."
Liebold has established OEM partnerships with more than half of the traditional photo processing equipment manufacturers in China to address opportunities in the Middle East, South America, East Europe, and Southeast Asia, in addition to the China market.
