Bill Gates grants 200m to fight AIDS in India

"NEW DELHI: A foundation set up by Microsoft head Bill Gates to combat the spread of AIDS in India announced on Monday that it was doubling its spending on the programme to 200 million US dollars.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation also announced that the first tranche of funding to the India AIDS initiative would be 67.5 million dollars, which organisers said would be put into use on projects starting next week.

Gates announced the 100 million dollars grant during his visit to India last November. "The foundation today announced that it has increased that commitment to 200 million dollars," it said in a statement. "This is the foundation’s single largest commitment to any HIV/AIDS-related initiative in the world."

Director of the programme Helen Gayle said the spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in India was reaching "a critical juncture" with the level of infection rising by as much as 20 percent per year.

"We only have a small window of opportunity to prevent a widespread epidemic," she said.

"The foundation is committed to working with the people of India to scale up effective HIV prevention efforts."

One of the co-chairs of the programme, J V R Prasada Rao, said that the project aimed to decrease the prevalence of HIV in high-risk groups as well as stabilise infection rates in the general population by 2008. "We are determined to achieve that goal," he said.
