"Much has been made of the "felon purge list," i.e., a list of those individuals who, under Florida law, were to be barred from voting due to felony convictions. The list had been prepared to prevent the kind of fraud that had occurred in the infamous Miami mayoral election, in which a number of ineligible felons voted. The list was inaccurate; it included people who shouldn't have been on it."
>>> Correct, some 80,000 were on the list, 90% of them in violation of the applicable election standards.
>>> The real crime here, was the actions of Kathrine Harris' office. They ORDERED the database collector to NOT VERIFY THE NAMES ON THE LIST. (This after switching the database contract to ChoicePoint, for more than a million dollars... when the State of florida had been doing the same job for less than $100,000 each election for years.)
>>> ChoicePoint realized that by not verifying the data, gross inaccuracies would insue... they notified Kathrine Harris' office of that fact --- but were ordered to NOT VERIFY the erroneous data.
>>> On the other-hand, they WERE ordered to include names that 'sort of' matched up... like if the last name was the same... or close in spelling, etc.
>>> Ridiculous for a database company - and they knew it.
>>> Over 90% of the 'felon names' ChoicePoint purchased from the State of Texas were inaccurate in Florida (i.e., THE WRONG PERSON). |
