I guess that means that neither XLNX nor ALTR nor hundreds of others can be successful unless they build their own fabs and make their own chips. that premise is non sequitur. A society cannot just survive by just consuming or designing. A society will thrive as long as it creates more value than it consumes. On a personal note, I've never manufactured anything. Yet, I've done reasonably well in getting compensated for the value I created. And I believe the same can be stated for the majority of the population. Manufacturing won't disappear, but it will continue to employ a smaller percentage of the population with each passing decade. Ian
