Claim China to overtake US, Japan as next economic superpower
Former prime minister Paul Keating has hailed China as the next economic superpower, eclipsing the United States and Japan.

In his address to the annual CPA conference in Melbourne, Mr Keating said it was in Australia's best interests to bolster relationships with Asian countries.

He also says Australia should be looking hard at its current arrangements with the United States.

"China is a phenomena and it's in our backyard," Mr Keating said.

"One of the reasons we should look long and hard at free trade agreements with the United States [is that] back lane, back door agreements never work in trade - they are always for the stronger party," he said.
