Qualcomm to focus on Wi-Fi integration on its chip set
By Junko Yoshida -- EE Times -- October 14, 2003 (10:00 a.m. EST)

GENEVA, Switzerland — Qualcomm Inc. is positioning itself as a wireless leader in multimode 3G phones, chairman and CEO Irwin Jacobs told the ITU Telecom World 2003 conference here on Tuesday (Oct. 14).

"3G is off to a strong start with CDMA2000 technology," Jacobs said, "already with 62 million users. And WCDMA is starting up now."

Qualcomm has developed its own WCDMA/GSM/GPRS chip which has gone from laboratory to field testing over the last 18 months. Along with the multimode chip, Jacobs also disclosed that Qualcomm has begun developing its own chip core for handling Wi-Fi DSPs based on 802.11b. "Operators are looking to use Wi-Fi to extend their coverage and include Wi-Fi services in the same billing structure," he said.

Qualcomm said it is planning to get its wireless features directly integrated in its own handset chip. "We are testing it now to see how well it performs," said Luis Pineda, vice president for marketing & product management at Qualcomm's CDMA Technologies. It has no plans to build their own Wi-Fi radio, however.
