Actually, we've been through this before, 3,000 years ago according to Julian Jaynes' theory that once mankind thought in just such animism terms. He says it was like a "Garden of Eden", without fear or doubt. Quite an amusing parallel to Rheingold's postulate, to think we're going back to the future of a sort of supernaturally intelligent environment....

Another corrollary -- If (re: Jaynes' "The Origin of Consciousness") our consciousness and language developed from abandoning that animism and the "bicameral mind" in 1450 BC, does that mean in the future our language and consciousness will atrophy??
