I did see the Pitts column and found his take on it interesting. I can relate to what he is saying yet don't find it particularly resonant.

Since you raised the question, I just now thought about what my reaction might have been had I been a staffer at the hospital. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have "stood up for" anyone, that it would never have occurred to be to do so.

I would most likely have rolled my eyes, muttered "asshole" not quite under my breath, given a conspiratorial wink to my black colleagues and expected them to mutter and wink back as we all went about our duties, then perhaps had a good bitch session and laugh with them over lunch. Basically, I would most likely brushed it off and encouraged anyone who was upset to do the same.

It's not that I don't care about discrimination. You know I do. And I've stood up many difficult times when situations have arisen. But this event was just so outrageous and sixties that I would have had a hard time treating it as a grievance. The guy was nuts. Treating it as a grievance only legitimizes it. Assuming that the hospital administration and staff were on decent terms, I would assume that management did what it did to defuse the situation and that they were muttering and winking along with me and my colleagues. Of course if there was bad blood between management and staff, that's another matter.
