Perhaps. But I don't see the point in defending those questioned. After all, this isn't an exam where the individual is penalized for wrong answers. They aren't being mistreated. The study was looking for trends in ignorance and bias, which is what the questions evoked. It serves us not at all to prompt people with the right answers so we can sit back all smug in our belief that we are an informed public.

I don't know about you but I was stunned when the earlier surveys were published, the ones reporting that some huge percentage of people thought that there were Iraqis on those 9/11 planes. Surely you recognize that kind of ignorance as a major civic problem. We can't fix it if we don't know about it. Not that we can fix it in any case, of course...
