I suppose there is a connection between feeling rebellious toward authority, and being in prison.

Perhaps a right of passage thing. Once you've done your time, you are a man. Nevermind that doing time is not the best way to provide for the future.

I think the heart of things lies in one's vision of the future. If you see a great many of your friends and relatives either in prison or dead and very few of them living productive lives, then perhaps there is some internal justification for living in the moment, not bound by rules. The thinking, consciouos or not, is that time is precious, cram in as much life as possible since tomorrow may not get here.
