I own ATML stock - but use on MCHP microcontrollers (I have owned MCHP stock in the past). Last numbers I saw, MCHP was number 2 behind Motorola (they may be number one now) in 8 bit microcontrollers. Their product application support is very good. Atmel has historically had a better flash integration with their uControllers - but MCHP has improved in that respect lately.
