Jesus did not embrace Old Testament fire and brimstone, that is a lie. Jesus was about one thing mainly, love.
Where is the love with the right-wing religious movement. It seems all about hatred, conflict, intolerance, paranoia and war. Jesus never called for any kind of war or intolerance. Just the opposite. He preached peaceful resistance and persecuted peoples defying rich masters, offering no resistance other than spiritual. Jesus was non-violent and loving toward all peoples. He forgave. Always remember that. If you use Jesus as an excuse for intolerance you're abusing Jesus. Jesus was most certainly a very liberal person. Most churches without political agendas (which none of them should have) are liberal. Bush's own Methodist church was strongly against the Iraq War.
