The hatred of the right-wing Christians goes back a long way. Nobody hated them, they just hated anyone who wanted to mess with their intolerant ways, much of it rooted way back during the confederacy. No surprise there are no blacks in the right-wing Christian movement. When liberals joined the Civil Rights movement they too became hated. When people questioned the Cold War and Vietnam, they too became hated. When people expressed sexual or psychic freedom, they too became hated. To the right-wing Christian, it all became a massive "demonic" conspiracy, fed by their belief in books like Revelations, as opposed to Jesus's real teachings which were about peace, love and tolerance.
