Nice find, Sarmad. There are occasional nuggets of gold amid the heaps at Yahoo Discussion. Since the HDD and QNTM threads are moribund here on SI, this is as good a place as any to discuss the finer points of MXO v WDC. Since I'm long both companies, I find it an interesting topic. Right now, MXO commands a $1.30 premium per share to WDC. Market cap: MXO 3.62B WDC 2.83B.

No doubt about it. These days, MXO is getting a lot of love from analysts, while WDC is despised. No question Maxtor is on a roll. On a one year basis, MXO is +550% compared to WDC + 150%. But the relative performance all depends on where you start to look at it:

2 yr MXO 225% WDC 425%
3 yr MXO 80% WDC 150%
4 yr MXO 295% WDC 165%
5 yr MXO 90% WDC 76%
10yr MXO 70% WDC 15%

Earlier this year, MXO sold at the biggest discount ever compared to WDC. At that time, I do not recall Miller and Blount telling their clients to switch from WDC to MXO. Now that the MXO premium is as high as it has been in the past decade, they are positively gushing about it.

If the MXO premium gets to about $1.50, I will probably switch from MXO to WDC. The yoyo-like histoy alone is enough to make one start to feed the ducks. I'd love to find an online broker that accepts orders like that. It ain't exactly rocket sci.
