So everyone takes care of himself, adn who pays for the Bush wars, law enforcement, highways, parks, disasters, the State department, and a hundred other critical things? If these things are not paid for, what happens? We just continually put them on the national credit card so US Treasury Bills become junk bonds? Clinton had it right, balance the budget and pay off our debts. Then we are truly strong. Unfortunately, that means taxing, especially taxing the rich, those who can afford to be taxed.
Also, what happens when someone like you retires and suddenly develops a catastrophic illness requiring 24 hour attention and $500 a pill drugs? You are wiped out within a few years. What do you do then? Or if you are laid off from your secure job and find yoself out on the street without a home after your savings are eaten away.
Do you actually believe there's anything keeping the average American from living on the street if a few catastrophes happen? After WWII Roosevelt decided to put an end to those risks, sharing the burden and providing eevruyone with at least survival in their old age. All that is paid for over the lifetime of the worker. Some need it, some don't but only ythe very rich know they migyht not become one of those who needs it. With the cost ofmedical care these days one serious illness can bankrupt even a millionaire. Or a lawsuit or an earthquake or all kinds of things. |
