I don't think we looked away so much as we let our values and logic get in the way of reality. It's hard for us in USA to understand the logic of a suicide attack, whether it be 9/11 or a child strapped with a bomb. We always think "it can't happen here." We need to understand the mindset of those who would manipulate troubled individuals with promises of ethereal rewards and martyrdom, all the while staying safe in their own homes. That is why it is so effective - this tactic of hunting down leaders of terrorist organizations and why there has been so little criticism of it.
