I've been in North Africa too. The main complaint against the Saudis seem to be (a) they didn't let their brother Arabs go to Mecca whenever they want, and (b) they stick to it to them when they do go to Mecca. There were ZERO complaints about their treatment of women.

When I saw the pictures of Arabs celebrating 911, I had no problem at all believing it. It fit right in with the attitudes I saw there. It isn't just the Iranians who think the US is the Great Satan.

And while Saudi attitudes towards women may be more extreme than your average Arab, none of them would quite meet with NOW's approval.

One country I spent some time in over there was Tunisia, a former French colony that had been heavily influenced by its colonial power. I was at an Arabsat ground station; Arabs from all over North Africa and the ME worked there. Women in Tunisia were treated pretty decently by Arab standards. This definitely pissed off the Arabs from other areas. The complaint was that this might spread back home.

Oh, back to the Saudis. I forgot a couple of things.

Women can't work in any enterprise where they might even POSSIBLY have to deal with men.

And women cannot drive.
