> my point was, in America, you can follow that dream if you are a woman

I've thought about this long and hard...the pursuit of dream that is. My conclusion is that in America, you can only fallow the dreams that are approved by the dominant culture, otherwise you have no chance of achieving them. In this respect America is not any different than other part of the world. When I worked on Wall Street, pretty much all my friends and I made a ton of cash. As did our significant others. It was by no means unusual to have family income of half a million. Yet many of us found enjoyment of this income not on par with what we expected. Speaking for myself and a few others whom I knew, we would have been happily willing to work 60% of the hours in exchange for a proportional reduction in the income. Such a dream can rarely come true in America, though. Here we are free to do whatever we want, so long as we are dedicated to making (or spending) money 100% of the time. Choosing to consume/produce at a slower pace than what the society demands is not a real option.

> their husbands money? that says it all

And what does it say? It is their husband's money. This is true both legally and logically. It is not that they do not have their own money. Many of them do. But the women are not expected to spend their own money, even when they have jobs and earn it.
