It's widely believed(short hand for who knows?) that a big part of the oil sands will never be extracted from the ground because it will take 500 barrels of oil to get 500 barrels of oil from there.

Those folks really need more patience. Eventually plate tectonics and deposition will sub-duct the oil sands to a much deeper level, where tremendous heat and pressure will transmogrify the viscous goo into clear light sweet crude, embedded in a matrix of easy-to-drill sandstone. All they have to do is wait 500 million years or so!
