But the women are not expected to spend their own money, even when they have jobs and earn it.

This is true. I also understand why it is difficult for an American woman to understand this custom.

When a group of friends go out to dinner, girls don't reach for their wallets at any point. Guys divide the bill among themselves, even when the girls are just friends, or even friends of friends.

It is not easy to explain this to especially North Americans, I find. That these women are not offended nor oppressed when they don't get to pay equal share in a bill.

Similarly, the wife might very well be quite rich on her own but her husband would still expect her to use his credit card and she certainly would not be asking for, nor paying for, the restaurant bill. The man assumes the responsibility for providing for the family, and they take pride in that role.
