I haven't heard of ethanol hurting engines.. I do remember when we changed over to it in Chicago area we got tons of complaints.. It cleans out everything , from crude in gas tank.. if any,, etc. First time filling your tank some would get as far as a block from the service station before breaking down... I went through it.. Car was running really ruff. Took it out and opened it up on the highway.. After awhile the engine mixture was clean enough to run properly... Cannot recall what per cent the mix was at the time. However, it was mandated by the states.
