That is what the Catholic Church teaches. But often in nature a fertilized egg will not implant. One can make an argument that creating an environment for natural failure falls short of directly killing or breaking an existing natural connection. One can rationalize it's like using the rhythm method that will in certain cases make far more likely a natural failure of implantation.

A person has to wrestle with the right and wrong of many such forms of birth control. But abortion is the direct intervention to destroy a growing human life that if left will be born.
