At this point, Bush beats them all. I think that Gephardt may be seriously underestimated. None of the candidates other can match his credentials as the quintessential Democrat. He is hard core with the back story and low net worth to back it up. Take away his vote on the war and maybe he would be doing significantly better. Unlike Kerry, Gephardt has had the conjones to stand by his vote. Nominate Gephardt and the GOP cannot make support for the war an issue. Maybe the election turns on the economy. Who better than Gephardt to articulate the Democratic message? If the war is the big issue in the Democratic primaries, Dean gets the nomination. On the other hand, I have a close friend who is a highly placed union official in Chicago. When I mention Gephardt to him, he shows no enthusiasm.
