The Gallup poll released this week gave Democrats John Kerry (news - web sites) and Wesley Clark an edge over Bush in an election face-off, and buoyed the party's hopes that it might finally have hit upon a unified and appealing message that resonates with the American public.
According to the Gallup poll, former NATO (news - web sites) commander Wesley Clark would beat Bush 49 percent to 46 percent, and Senator John Kerry would win 49 to 47 percent.

Bush had leads over other leading Democrats, besting former Vermont governor Howard Dean (news - web sites) 49-41 percent, Representative Dick Gephardt (news - web sites) 48-43 percent and Senator Joe Lieberman (news - web sites) 48-43 percent.
