Clearly our technology has outstripped our ability to make ethical decisions about it.
A century ago there would have been no issue -- she would have died, been mourned, and her friends and family would have moved on.
She is, if medical reports can be relied on, unaware of all that is swirling around her. She is at this point a pawn, not a player.
What I find most discouraging is the way in which people are using her, fighting over her not for her but for their benefit -- and I include in this her parents and her husband, all of whom I think are really invested in their positions for their sakes, not her sake, whatever they may say.
With the number of infants and young children who are neglected and not receiving adequate care, the resources our legal, medical, and government systems are spending on this case are, IMO, terribly wasted. So much real good could have been done with this money and these medical resources. |
