"Anything which contradicted the scriptures was considered heretical, and UnHoly--opposed to God."

Anything that contradicts our interpretation of the "right doctrine of life" is treated with intense discordance, even violence. This is true whether people are disagreeing with what scriptures prescribe or a secular statute such as discrimination. If someone proposes an unpopular view they are likely to be met with hostility, even before there has been proper consideration of the view point.

So, as society develops and modernizes people must re-address the interpretations of divine scripture and often refine their interpretations. That does not negate something such as the golden rule. Finding new ways to bring healthy and beneficial experiences to others does not negate the golden rule. Developing scientific methods to study the nature of energy doesn't negate it either.
