I am sorry that you were not able to grasp the deeper meaning of the metaphor.

It was not a question of how many. The use of the life raft could be altered in a variety of ways to enable the accommodation of more than twelve people. How, or to what extent we could find ways to do that was not the point.

The point was that when we are the thirteenth man, we always see the benefits of others considering our plight and finding ways to extend charity to us. In some respects we are all the thirteenth man. The test of character for the thirteenth man was not how cleaver he could be in persuading others to make a place for him, it was the extent to which he would extend the same consideration and charity toward others.

I figure its like trying to explain a joke. If you didn't get it, analysing and explaining probably didn't help.
