Some people think he knowingly did it, or as you put it, misrepresented on purpose.

That doesn't make them un-American. In America one has a right to his/her opinion. That is precisely what makes America great. I remember Rush 10 years ago and his "America held hostage" programs. He had all kinds of opinions.(most of which were not proven) Now that makes him un American? I'm sure there are many examples of republican senators expressing opinions which were not established in fact. Does that make them un American?

I think your definition of un American is shallow. (and inaccurate)
