You asked..
"How much of your energy needs does the solar system provide? That system sounds big. Does it cover your entire roof? Will you ever break even on it?"

Actually it is located at my camp in the middle of no where<<gg>>about 40 miles to the grid.It provides lights for 2 buildings, small microwave, water pump, power tools tvs vcrs soon to be satelite tv and washing machine.I can easily track the sun by manually turning the panels..giving 10 amps with the solar boost so real heavy loads like running washing machine is saved for sunny day if I add the third panel that would give about 15 amps in bright sun also batterys must be fully charged to start.I am not sure if i will ever break even on it..but maybe not too long if consider price of gas @ $.78 per litre and maintenance etc on generater.Because the charge controller is located at a convenient spot in the house it is easy to monitor the battery condition and run appliances accordingly.Batterys must not be forgotten..I top them up and clean terminals and check S.G. every 3 months. There are no continuous loads on this system. All loads are by choice, fridge and stove are propane and I still have propane lights as back up.

System consists of

Two bp 80 watt panel's and looking to add 3'rd shortly..here
solarengineers.com
Connected by #6 wire to charge controller(solar boost 2000e) here..
gotsolar.com
Charge controller is then connected to battary bank(#6 wire) which consists of 8 six volt excide deep cycle battery's here..
gnb.com
Seven feet each, pos and neg, #02 welding cable from batterys( now 12 volts) to 3000 watt inverter here..
xantrex.com
What comes out of inverter is 120 volts AC modified sine wave which is hard wired into ac electrical distribution panel which has in this case 4 circuits 2 for main building, 1 for guest house, 1 for pump @ 1100 watts here..
grundfos.com
very interesting site.
Lightning arresters are on charge controller(solar panel side) and main ac distribution panel( neutral and loads) grounding of this syustem is very very important.Probably by adding the extra panel and a 400 watt wind generator I would have an ideal system for "the bush"
gg
PS if you are going to start a small system, and build on it, these battery's here would be your best bet..
