It reminds me about those who complain about how much the U.S. aided the Taliban when they were fighting the Soviets (not realizing that the Taliban were founded after the Soviets left Afghanistan).

A lot of people 9on both sides) get the details wrong. That doesn't change the fact that the Americans, in the grip of the urge to use the mujahedin to give Ivan a good reaming, made significant contributions to the growth of Islamic radicalism.

Long before Al Qaeda was formed as an organization, there was a house in Peshawar where foreign militants stayed on their way to training and combat. The house was called "The Base" - Al Qaeda. Osama spent time there. People who passed through that house have told me that Americans of the spook persuasion were occasionally among those present, and they weren't dropping by on social visits. I see no reason to doubt it.
