I suppose the fact that the POW Jessica Lynch legend is largely fictional is old news here, but below is a link to a CJR piece on the irresponsible press coverage of Lynch, who it seems wasn't in fact ever shot, hadn't ever fired her weapon, wasn't slapped around in the hospital (in fact her life was saved by Iraqi doctors), wasn't saved in a dangerous and daring rescue mission, etc etc:

(I understand the reason her company got lost in the first place was that their training in map reading was inadequate.)

I myself was very upset for Jessica Lynch. I believed the stories. I wept with gratitude to the Iraqi lawyer-good samaritan who helped "save" her. I was fooled.
