OT-Solar flare, could disrupt communications and/or power, also
could create northern lights visible far south.
--
The active region of the sun that produced the coronal mass ejection on Wednesday has grown to about 10 times the size of the Earth and is nearing the center of the sun. The second spot is rotating on the southeast quadrant of the sun and is not yet visible.

Combs says either of these active regions could produce further eruptions over the next two weeks, which means satellites, other spacecraft, and high frequency communication systems remain vulnerable for that time.

While the prospect of disrupted technology may be worrisome, there is a flip side. Intense solar activity and solar mass ejections can create brilliant, shimmering aurorae, which are an unforgettable sight for those lucky enough to be looking up at a dark sky at the right place and time. NASA scientists predict the northern lights could be visible as far south as Oregon and Illinois
