That's a great story.

There was a book I read about, but haven't read, about great scams. Wonder whether he/she made it.

I Googled (a word the OED hasn't picked up yet, but will soon, I'm sure!) the car and found that you can buy its sales literature (http://www.mclellansautomotive.com/sales-lit/bymake/dale/index.shtml)

This site says he/she was actually born Jerry Dean Michael. Change of name as well as gender along the way?

They also claim that you can see a Dale at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. Maybe, but it's not on their web site.

Still, a fascinating story. I do get a certain thrill out of reading about successful scams and wondering what on earth the investors in those scams were thinking (or more likely NOT thinking) about.
