"There is plenty of middle ground here, somewhere between the demons and demonizers on one side and those on the other."

In the context of the BoR there is no middle ground. We have the right of Free Expression and the Government may make no law that restricts freedom of religion.

No where in the constitution does it say " we must find a middle ground and that there should be limited mention of God in the public forum, or in or on government buildings or documents.

My advice to your non believing friends is that if they do not want their children to say a pledge of allegiance to our Country and acknowledge that we were formed under Christian principles that they should tell them to remain silent during the pledge. Kind of like "Just say no."

It is not required that anyone make an issue out of something they disagree with. Why should the discomfort of a small minority of the population be given more weight than the will of the majority?
