but do believe the invasion of privacy far outweighs anything the General may or may not have said.

You're entitled. I may come to agree with you once we get the whole story on how the story was developed. Privacy is one of my favorite rights. As of now, I haven't heard anything that couldn't have an innocent explanation. Not that it does, mind you, but it is my way to give everyone the benefit of the doubt until there is no longer a reasonable doubt. So it will be a while before I can assess what dirty tricks may have been played and whether or not they outrage me more than what the general did. I have not criticized the general for anything save speaking out contrary to his commander in chief at a time of war. Even if what was reported turns out only half accurate, he still violated something that I think is most important. Even Bush and Rumsfeld acknowledged that as they reiterated the official policy, which was at variance with what the general said. Beyond that, it's too early for me to judge.

Do you think it's likely he hadn't considered it might be used by our enemies to engender more support for their cause of killing Americans?

I expect that they both did us damage. Takes two to tango.

and for some strange reason is unwilling to release the full transcripts of the church speeches.

There could be an innocent explanation for that, too. He could be protecting the privacy of innocent churchgoers. Or not...
