The truth is this is just like Vietnam.

There was supposed to be free elections in '52 or '53. The polls indicated that Ho Chi Minh would win. The US didn't like that so we abrogated the treaty and arbitrarily split the country.

The same thing is true today. The vast majority of Iraqis want an Islamic state like Iran. The US doesn't like that so we will try anything, including stalling, to make sure there is no popularly elected government. Some of the more deluded officials of our government think that given time the populace will come over to our side. Unfortunately the longer we stall the more resentments will build among the populace. We are stuck in the mud and our kids are dying. Anybody with a brain could see this would be the inevitable result of our going this alone, without UN support, because of the IMPATIENCE of the Bush administration. Even with UN support it was a nearly hopeless cause.

It's a mess, just as I predicted. We were lied to. This stuff goes back long before 911 and most of America is still totally ignorant of the history of the region. And those kids over there are paying the price just like the 56,000 who died in Vietnam.
