You said something in a post a day or two ago that has stuck with me as I thought about this case and caused me to come to a different decision than I originally had. You said that in not intervening, death became the default position in this case.

It's become obvious as we all toss it around, just how murky are the facts surrounding this case; the unknowns increase the more people post. Is the husband a venal murdering fiend? Are the parents lost in some delusion of their daughter returning to them? The issues- medical, legal, ethical-- none of these is clear. When the doctors can't even agree on her condition as being a clearcut PVS-the place at which the other issues kick in for me- how can you even begin to consider conflicts of interest and the value of human life?

The intervention of the Legislature, so obviously designed only for this case given its parameters, bothers me, but because I think you are right about death being the default, I would rather err almost any other way. I just hope that the circus stops and thoughtful investigation and evaluation can start. The issues are pretty important since we boomers are entering our Golden Years and there are going to be many of us confronting these decisions as medical science is able to keep us alive indefinitely.

Anyway- they say that people's minds can't be changed here at SI, and while my ultimate beliefs about this may not have changed, my feeling about this case has because of that one statement. Maybe you should get an award or something?
