The Evangelicals have a lot of Missionary "boots on the ground" and have a better feel for the people than the Embassy cookie pushers.

After 20+ years with my boots on the ground in the developing world, I would rate missionaries and diplomats at about the same abysmally low level when it comes to having a "feel for the people".

I should amend that, and will. I've met a few missionaries, mostly Catholic priests, who really did have a feel for the people. These are the ones who came and stayed, learned the language and took the time to learn what is really going on behind that facade of apparent irrationality. These are not, I suspect, the ones you will find giving advice in the White House.

Anybody who enters the developing world with a fixed-focus lens is not going to see very clearly.
