The nieces and nephews thesis has been proposed often. For example, in The Whisperings Within, by David Barash, and in The Moral Animal, by Robert Wright. Who knows? Maybe it could be an recessive incidental effect accompanying some other familial mutation that outbalanced in survival-utility the disadvantage of having the occasional bro who didn't spawn.
